Choreographer Hofesh Shechter has announced an open call for a major new dance project he is directing at the Tower of London next year.

It is the first major public art event that will take place in the tower’s moat since the 2014 poppies installation, Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red, and will comprise dance and live music co-produced by East London Dance and the Hofesh Shechter Company.

Created in partnership with Historic Royal Palaces and the London International Festival of Theatre, the project will involve 160 London-based community dancers participating in the large-scale performance.

Shechter is creating the show, East Wall, in collaboration with four up-and-coming choreographers: Becky Namgauds, Duwane Taylor, James Finnemore and Joseph Toonga.

The open call will take place on March 10 at the University of East London’s Stratford campus, ahead of the performance in July.

It is open to dancers aged between 13 and 25, and is seeking performers across a range of movement and dance styles.

Shechter said: “East Wall is an invitation for people to come together, and through the open call we have a unique opportunity to bring local young people into the heart of the creation of the piece. I can’t wait to meet all these performers and to witness the artistry, dance styles, cultures, personality and dynamic energy of east London through them.”

East London Dance, which is creating East Wall with Shechter, has also announced it will co-produce a new piece of work exploring east London fashion culture.

Identity, which is co-produced with and running at Shoreditch Town Hall, will fuse fashion and dance in a catwalk-style arena set and is described as a “gig-like dance experience”.

It runs from April 12 to 14.
