Tributes have been paid to Peter Plouviez, the former general secretary of Equity, following his death on October 5, aged 86.

In an email to Equity staff, current general secretary Christine Payne said: “Peter was our general secretary from 1973 to 1991 and during those 18 years he made a profound contribution to the advancement of the union.”

Plouviez had also served as vice-president of the International Federation of Actors, which described him as “one of the most respected pillars of our federation”.

The IFA added: “Under his leadership, the membership of this union rose dramatically and incorporated the Variety Artistes’ Federation. Peter believed in international solidarity and the need to reach beyond national borders to promote higher professional standards and respect for performers and their craft.”

Glen Barnham, Equity’s former national organiser for BBC television and radio, tweeted: “RIP Peter Plouviez (Gen Secretary Equity 1973-91) sadly passed away yesterday. Much loved boss. Very much a one-off in the Harley Street days.”

A memorial service is expected to be held in the New Year.
