David Hare will be given this year's Gielgud award for excellence in the dramatic arts at the 2017 UK Theatre Awards.

The playwright, whose most famous works include Skylight, Stuff Happens and The Judas Kiss, will receive the accolade at the UK Theatre Awards ceremony on October 15.

The award was established by the Shakespeare Guild in 1994. Previous recipients include Vanessa Redgrave, Eileen Atkins, Patrick Stewart and Judi Dench.

Hare will be recognised alongside Lyn Gardner, who has already been announced as the recipient of the award for outstanding contribution to British theatre.

Nominated shows for this year's UK Theatre Awards include Everybody's Talking About Jamie at Sheffield Theatres, Sweet Charity at the Royal Exchange and Caroline, Or Change at Chichester Festival Theatre, starring Sharon D Clarke, who is presenting the ceremony and is also nominated individually.
