Brighton offers £80k salary to recruit culture tsar
Brighton and Hove City Council is offering a £77,000 salary for a newly created culture tsar role.
The successful applicant for the for the arts and culture programme director post, whose remit will be to shape the city’s cultural and heritage offerings for the next 10 years, will also receive a relocation package of up to £10,000.
According to the job specification, main responsibilities will include overseeing the transfer of the Royal Pavilion and Museums’ sites to a new charitable trust. This means that the organisation will no longer be controlled by the council.
Other responsibilities include embedding culture at the heart of the city’s regeneration and economic growth, leading the development of a new 10-year strategic framework for arts and culture, and leading on the delivery of a £35 million capital investment programme.
Although this is a new role, it is similar to the post of assistant chief executive held by Paula Murray until August last year.
Murray moved to Croydon Council and her role was abolished, with responsibility for culture passing to a new executive director of economy, environment and culture.
The reduction of top-level management and the savings that the abolition of the post entailed were feted at the time by council chief executive Geoff Raw.
It is unclear how the role’s cultural remit will differ from the post of executive director of economy, environment and culture, taken up by Nick Hibberd in September.
