Magic show The Illusionists has broken box office records at the Shaftesbury Theatre, with the production taking more than £1 million in its final week.

Overall, its seven-week run took a total of £3.4 million at the box office, which the venue said made it the highest grossing short season ever to play at the theatre.

In its final week, from December 28 to January 3, it took more than a £1 million and was seen by more than 18,500 people, breaking both sales and attendance records. The previous record was held by Derren Brown’s Svengali.

Shaftesbury Theatre chief executive James Williams said it had been a “real honour for the theatre to host such a hugely successful show”.
