Scottish Opera commissions prequel to Bluebeard’s Castle in new season

Scottish Opera has commissioned Vanishing Point’s artistic director Matthew Lenton to co-create The 8th Door, a prequel companion piece to Bartok’s Bluebeard’s Castle for its 2016/17 season.

Lenton will work with composer Liam Paterson, who is a Scottish Opera emerging artist. The opera will receive its world premiere in Glasgow in March 2017 alongside a new production of Bluebeard’s Castle, also directed by Lenton.

Scottish Opera’s general director, Alex Reedijk, told The Stage that the commission from Matthew Lenton is the outcome of a lengthy process.

He said: “I have been in Scotland for ten years now and Matthew’s work came to my attention very early on. One of the things which is true for all of his performances is the importance that music plays in them. Here is a man who knows how to meld music into his theatricality.”

Scottish Opera’s 2016/17 season includes four new productions. David McVicar is directing Debussy’s Pelleas and Melisande. Designed by Rae Smith and lit by Paule Constable, the design team on War Horse, the production opens in Glasgow in February 2017.

A new production of Puccini’s La boheme, inspired by the Jazz Age of Josephine Baker, will be directed by Renaud Doucet and designed by Andre Barbe, opening in Glasgow in May 2017. A small scale production of Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love, scored for five instruments with small chorus and soloists, will tour 17 smaller Scottish venues in September and October 2016.

The company is also reviving its co-production of Philip Glass’s The Trial for its Scottish premiere in January 2017.
