Scottish Ballet’s 2016/17 line-up to include works by Crystal Pite and David Dawson
Scottish Ballet will “push the boundaries of classical ballet” with the premiere a new production of Swan Lake by David Dawson in its 2016/17 season.
The company will also stage the European premiere of Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite’s 2009 piece, Emergence, alongside a new work from company dancer and emerging choreographer Sophie Laplane.
Meanwhile, artistic director Christopher Hampson’s take on Hansel and Gretel, which the company premiered in 2013, is to return for the Christmas season.
Dawson’s Swan Lake will be designed by John Otto with costumes by Yumiko Takeshima. It will open at Glasgow’s Theatre Royal on April 19, touring to Aberdeen, Inverness, Newcastle and Edinburgh before closing in Liverpool on June 4.
There is a limited Autumn run for the Emergence/new work double bill, opening in Glasgow on September 29 and touring to Inverness before closing in Aberdeen on October 15.
Hansel and Gretel will play the Edinburgh Festival Theatre in December (10 to 31), touring to Glasgow and Aberdeen before closing in Inverness on January 28, 2017.
Describing the new programme as “replete with creative voices”, Hampson said: “David Dawson will push the boundaries of classical ballet in our new production of Swan Lake, providing us with a bold addition to the repertoire.
“I’m thrilled that Crystal Pite, one of today’s most innovative and exciting choreographers, will be working with us to bring Emergence to our audiences, alongside our own choreographic rising star, Sophie Laplane, who is poised to be taking the next step in her very promising career.”
The company’s Scottish Ballet Creative arm, which aims to merge classical and contemporary dance with other creative arts, is currently working with visual arts organisation The Common Guild on part of a new project by Turner Prize winner Simon Starling.
Full details of the project will be announced this year, but it will include a new piece of choreography by Javier de Frutos, realised in conjunction with Scottish Ballet and featuring company dancer Thomas Edwards.
