Maxine Peake is to play Blanche DuBois in a new production of A Streetcar Named Desire.

Peake will take the lead role in a production of the Tennessee Williams play at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester, reuniting her with director Sarah Frankcom.

Frankcom and Peake have previously worked together on productions including The Skriker, Hamlet and The Masque of Anarchy.

Peake described Blanche DuBois as a “monumental woman”, adding: “Finding out who she is and developing her in a rehearsal room with a brilliant and generous director like Sarah is a thrilling journey to go on. I can’t wait to start.”

A Streetcar Named Desire will open the theatre’s 40th anniversary season, running from September 8 to October 15. A press night will be held on September 13.
