Fin Kennedy and Lucy Kerbel are among the dramatists leading a free playwriting course and prize for students, which will culminate in five new plays being published.

The pair are among 10 practitioners who have each prepared a lesson plan as part of the initiative.

The plans are available for free online. After writers have engaged with each of the lessons, which look at areas such as characterisation, dialogue and structure, they can submit original plays to be considered for the prize.  Five winners will then be selected from four categories: school students, college and university students, emerging writers and general writers.

A statement by the organisers explained that they wanted the competition “to recognise and encourage anyone to be a student of playwriting”.

The winning plays will be published by Oberon Books and will also be performed at Drama Centre London. Oberon Books has partnered with the Bush Theatre and development organisation Writers at Work Productions on the scheme, alongside MA Dramatic Writing, a new course for training drama writers.

Entries for the prize will open on February 15 and close on March 1.

This story was updated on February 1 after The Stage was informed Rebecca Lenkiewicz is no longer involved in the scheme.
