Leicester Curve announces record £10.2m turnover
Leicester venue Curve has announced a record turnover of £10.2 million, driven by an increase in ticket sales and touring work.
The annual report covers the first year under the new leadership team of artistic director Nikolai Foster and executive director Chris Stafford.
It shows that the theatre’s turnover was £10.2 million in 2015/16, compared with £7.9 million the year before. The biggest bulk of the 2015/16 figure was made up of 58% of ticket sales, compared with 50% the year before.
The venue saw 251,676 tickets sold in 2015/16, up from 196,969 the previous year. Average attendance at the venue rose from 78% to 79%, however the theatre’s capacity has increased in that time.
When Foster joined as artistic director, the venue added 99 seats to take its total capacity to 902 seats. Speaking at the time, Foster said he hoped the increase in capacity would generate more revenue.
The report also shows that 39% of audiences were new to Curve in 2015/16.
Stafford said touring work, including Hairspray, The Witches and Breakfast at Tiffany’s, had had a “major impact” on the business.
He added that more than 500,000 people had engaged with a Curve production, either at the venue or as part of a touring production.
The report shows that black, Asian or minority ethnic audiences attending Curve-produced shows made up 46% of audiences, the same as the previous year.
Chair Philip Tasker said touring had boosted the venue “financially and reputationally”.
