A big screen adaptation of the stage show Wicked will open in cinemas in December 2019.

The film will be directed by Stephen Daldry.

Winnie Holzman, who wrote the musical’s book, is reported to be co-writing the script with Stephen Schwartz, the composer and lyricist of the show.

Wicked, based on a book by Gregory Maguire, is currently running in London at the Apollo Victoria Theatre.

It opened there in 2006 and marks its 10th anniversary this year.

Casting for the film has not been announced.
