Award-winning set and costume designer Anna Fleischle has called for more recognition of her peers’ work.

The Hangmen designer also said more needed to be done to support emerging designers at the beginning of their careers.

Fleischle was speaking to The Stage at the Critics’ Circle Awards, where she received the best designer prize for Hangmen.

She said, “People don’t realise how many decisions are made by designers… I think it would be great if there was more recognition for designers and that how much you see on stage is not just a backdrop.”

She added: “What a lot of us do now is create that space, and the concept, and the direction of the piece. We are very much a part of that.”

Speaking about designers at the start of their careers, she said it was very hard for them, and noted that other areas of the sector, such as directing, had initiatives to nurture new talent.

“There is not enough [for designers] and I wish there was more as it’s very hard to break into,” she said, adding that there was a tradition for well-known directors to be paired with well-known designers.

“For a young designer it’s very hard to make that step to move along and I think it would be fantastic if there were more initiatives for them,” she explained, and added that she personally offered opportunities for young designers to work with her, providing them with a “stepping stone”.
