A musical theatre development programme is to be launched to nurture more Welsh productions.

A pilot run of the 10 Minute Musicals programme took place this year, with founder Leeway Productions partnering with Cardiff’s the Other Room as it expands the scheme.

In 2017, the initiative will run three showcases of new short musicals at the Other Room. These will be the culmination of a process featuring a series of workshops as well as mentoring.

Two will be bilingual, available to theatremakers who work in either English or Welsh, and one will specifically focus on developing new work in Welsh.

Angharad Lee, director of Leeway Productions, has also called for playwrights, composers, librettists, lyricists, poets and musicians to be involved with the project as it expands next year.

“We will be calling out to creatives who are keen to try their hand at writing a musical, and also more established artists who may want to upskill and network with new creatives and artists,” she said.

Aside from the showcases at the Other Room, which will be attended by programmers and venue managers, there are planned opportunities for the work to be seen by production company Perfect Pitch and the Royal and Derngate, as well as performed part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival in Los Angeles.

Participation will cost £80 per person.
