King’s Head Theatre workers to get 22% pay rise
Actors and stage managers working at the King’s Head Theatre in London will receive a 22% pay increase as part of a new agreement with Equity.
The Islington theatre, which was the first fringe theatre to sign up to the Equity Fringe Agreement in 2011, will now pay £33 per performance and £27.45 for every three hour session of rehearsals.
On a standard six-week engagement this will see an increase from £216 to £264 per week, which could increase further with additional rehearsals or performances.
Adam Spreadbury-Maher, artistic director of the King’s Head Theatre, said: “At the King’s Head we believe that if you value art, you should pay professionals – professionally. If there is a will, there’s a way – and we’re leading the way in improving the conditions for actors working on the fringe, despite being unfunded.”
The new agreement for the King’s Head comes a month after Jermyn Street Theatre joined Equity’s fringe agreement, guaranteeing national minimum wage for its actors and stage managers.
Equity low pay no pay organiser Emmanuel de Lange said: “This agreement is clear evidence that pub venues with no public funding can make the finances work to pay their performers. The King’s Head raises tens of thousands of pounds a year to make that happen.
“They’re part of the solution to low and no pay in fringe theatre. There are plenty of other venues which should be doing the same thing, rather than contributing to the problem.”
