ATG loses management of Churchill Theatre to Qdos Entertainment

The Churchill Theatre in Bromley will be taken over by Qdos Entertainment after the company outbid Ambassador Theatre Group

Ambassador Theatre Group has lost the management contract for the Churchill Theatre in Bromley after running it for 15 years.

From April next year Qdos Entertainment will take over the running of the south-east London receiving house, having signed a 25-year agreement with the venue’s owner, Bromley Borough Council.

ATG joint chief executive Rosemary Squire said: “We’re extremely saddened that the Churchill Theatre will leave the ATG family next year. The theatre has been at the heart of our regional venue portfolio since the year 2000 and is one we are all immensely proud of.”

Despite ATG having bid to renew the contract, she continued: “However, the level of partnership funding that will be available in the future would not allow us to sustain a high quality venue with the great creative learning and work we have always produced in the community of Bromley.”

With the Churchill Theatre, Qdos – the second largest regional theatre operator in the UK – now manages a portfolio of 12 venues including the Lyceum Theatre in Crewe and G Live in Guildford.

The company has previously staged several pantomimes and co-productions at the Churchill Theatre, which chairman Nick Thomas said he had a “great fondness” for.

He added: “I am thrilled that after a gap of many years, we shall be presenting our high-quality, star-led, traditional family pantomimes in Bromley once again, to delight and entertain young and old alike.”

The chairman also said Qdos planned to improve the theatre as a public space, “by offering excellent, value-for-money eating and drinking experiences, and a tempting array of new entertainment-with-food packages”.

Squire thanked the Churchill Theatre’s staff for their “loyalty and commitment” over the past 15 years under ATG, adding: “We will work with Bromley Borough Council to ensure a smooth transition period for all concerned and will continue talks with our staff and other parties who will be affected by the decision.”

All shows and events already programmed at the venue will continue as planned.
