Grace Smart has been announced as the winner of the 2015 Linbury Prize for Stage Design.

She will design the forthcoming production of Saint Joan at the Lyric Theatre in Belfast as part of her prize.

The competition’s 12 finalists worked with theatres including the Lyric, the Royal Court in London, the Nuffield in Southampton and the Traverse in Edinburgh, and three other shortlisted designers have been commissioned to realise their designs in production.

Camilla Clarke will design Human Animals at the Royal Court, Jen McGinley’s designs for Autumn will be created for the Traverse, and Philippa Brocklehurst will design A Passage to India at the Nuffield.

In addition to the winners, Minglu Wang will design a production of A Winter’s Tale in Ukraine in 2016, in conjunction with the British Council.

The Linbury Prize was founded in 1987 as a springboard for recent design graduates into the theatre industry.

Previous winners include Tim Hatley and Es Devlin, and this year’s judging panel was made up of designers Sophie Jump, Tom Piper and Tom Scutt.
