Pilot Theatre to lead £3.2m European creative project

Pilot Theatre is to head up a four-year international cooperation project, thanks to a €2 million (£1.6 million) grant from the European culture funding stream, Creative Europe.

Platform Shift+, will form a network of 10 European theatres led by York-based company Pilot, which will develop 40 theatre productions based on newly developed concepts over a four year period.

The project will cost €4 million (£3.2 million) overall and includes theatres from Portugal, Italy, Germany, Norway, Hungary, Estonia, France and the Czech Republic as well as touring company Pilot and London-based Emergency Exit Arts.

The 10 theatre partners will be joined by the University of Agder in Norway, and will work with local and regional cultural partners including schools and young people, using digital technology and innovative training to “develop, exchange and share work, expertise and ideas”.

In 2009 Pilot became the UK partner for Platform 11+, which worked with theatres in 12 European countries, after which the company collaborated with theatres across the globe.

Pilot’s artistic director, Marcus Romer, said: “We are delighted to be able to continue our collaboration work across Europe, creating inspiring opportunities for emergent artists to develop next practice in theatre and the arts.”

Mandy Smith, producer for Pilot, added that the “ambitious” programme of work would “offer inspiring creative opportunities to young people and artists both in the UK and the other countries”.
