Roberta Taylor is to return to Glasgow’s Citizens Theatre this autumn to appear in a new production of Hamlet helmed by artistic director Dominic Hill.

A regular on the Citizens’ stage from the 70s to the mid 90s, Taylor, who is known for her TV roles in The Bill and EastEnders, will play Gertrude with her husband Peter Guiness, also a Citizens veteran, as Claudius.

Hamlet will run from September 19 to October 11 with a press night on September 24. Brian Ferguson will play the title role.

Announcing the autumn season, Hill said: “We’re fast approaching the Citizens’ 70th anniversary in the Gorbals in 2015, and I feel we’ve programmed a season that showcases the best of our history and heritage, as well as some great new writing and work by some of the most innovative theatre companies working in the UK today.”

Besides a visit from Headlong with the Scottish premiere of 1984, running August 29 to September 6, the season includes the touring revival of the NTS production of Joe Corrie’s In Time o’ Strife.

Timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the 1984 miners strike, In Time o’ Strife is directed by Graham McLaren. In addition to Corrie’s original script, the production interweaves fragments of his other plays, poems and songs

The production had a limited run in Kirkcaldy in 2013 and has now been recast. It opens at the Lochgelly Centre, Fife, on August 28 before touring Scotland and Wales over the autumn. It will play the Citizens from October 14 to 18.
