Bend It Like Beckham musical to open at the Phoenix Theatre in May
A musical version of the film Bend It Like Beckham will open at the Phoenix Theatre next May.
The show has music by Howard Goodall and lyrics by Charles Hart, and will be directed by Gurinder Chadha, who helmed the film.
It will have a new book by Chadha and Paul Mayeda Berges and choreography by Aletta Collins.
The show will open at the Phoenix Theatre on May 15, with opening night on June 24.
Chadha said: “Developing Bend It Like Beckham for the stage has been the most enjoyable creative process of my career so far. It was always my intention to build on the film and to present its themes and storylines to live audiences in an exciting new dynamic way.”
She added that the show would be a “totally new kind of musical”, describing it as “part West End, part London Punjabi, but whole heartedly British”.
Bend It Like Beckham’s set design will be by Miriam Buether, with costumes by Katrina Lindsay, lighting by Neil Austin, sound design by Richard Brooker and musical direction by Nigel Lilley.
Goodall will oversee the orchestrations, alongside Kuljit Bhamra.
The show is produced by Sonia Friedman Productions.
