London’s Young Vic Theatre and entertainment union BECTU are in talks to negotiate a new structure for the venue’s front of house staff.

The venue is planning to create four new full-time box office positions, which will also cover the work currently carried out by its theatre officer.

As it stands, the venue hires a group of around eight members of staff on casual contracts to operate the box office, alongside one full-time theatre officer, who is responsible for audience relations.

These members of staff will lose their current jobs but are being encouraged to apply for the four new positions available.

Alongside this, the Young Vic has agreed with six of its ushers that they will form a core team, out of the pool of 30 that work on a casual basis.

Young Vic artistic director David Lan said this will mean the venue has trained staff on-hand every night, which will be supplemented by a reduced number of casuals.

Lan said: “Everything that we’ve done in terms of the restructure has been done with the close collaboration of BECTU. What we are trying to achieve is an improvement on previous arrangements.”

He added: “If the people who are running our box office are part of our in-house teams and consequently come to our meetings and are better informed about our shows and what we are trying to achieve, they will be fully integrated into the life of the theatre.”

Lan confirmed those members of staff losing out on future work at the venue as a result of the restructuring would be provided with financial compensation.

Negotiations between BECTU and the Young Vic are expected to be completed within the next month.
