Luke Owen has been named the winner of this year’s Papatango New Writing Prize, which is jointly run by the Finborough Theatre in London.

His debut play, Unscorched, was selected from more than 500 entries.

Described as “a delicate and unashamed exploration of the taboos of working in child protection”, the piece will run at the Finborough Theatre from October 29 October to November 23, following a development week at Bristol Old Vic.

Owen is a graduate of the University of East Anglia, where he received a BA in English and drama before graduating from the MA course in creative writing. He is also a former member of the Royal Court Theatre Young Writers’ Programme.

This is the fifth year of the competition, which is run by Papatango Theatre Company in partnership with the Finborough Theatre.

This year’s judging panel included the four members of Papatango – George Turvey, Matt Roberts, Sam Donovan and Chris Foxon – plus Finborough Theatre’s artistic director Neil McPherson and its literary manager, Francis Grin.
