Dutch actress Willemijn Verkaik is to play Elphaba in the West End production of Wicked from November.

Verkaik has previously played the role in the Netherlands, Germany and in the US and is the only actress to have performed as Elphaba in more than one language. She will join the production, which is running at the Victoria Apollo Theatre, on November 18. Verkaik replaces Louise Dearman in the lead role.

Executive producer Michael McCabe said: “Since its Broadway debut ten years ago, Wicked has become a truly global phenomenon and nobody personifies the show’s international appeal more than Willemijn, who has performed the role of Elphaba in three languages in three different countries. We are thrilled that London audiences will now get the opportunity to experience Willemijn’s incredible performance, for which she has been so justly acclaimed.”
