Spiegeltent set for Brighton festivals return

by -

The Famous Spiegeltent is to return to Brighton after a seven-year absence as part of this summer’s fringe and festival.

Brighton Fringe and Brighton Festival are joining forces to bring the Famous Spiegel Garden back. The venue, which will be pitched between the Royal Pavilion and the Pier, will feature productions from both events.

Its Brighton Fringe programme will run from May 3 to June 2 and will include a world premiere show from circus act La Clique, as well as Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen and Movin’ Melvin Brown. Meanwhile, Brighton Festival will programme work in the tent from May 18 to 25 – full details have yet to be announced.

Julian Caddy, managing director of Brighton Fringe, said: “[Producer] David Bates and the Famous Spiegeltent International have built up an unparalleled reputation for excellence for over 15 years. I remember their very first Edinburgh Fringe season in 1996, so it’s a great privilege to have been able to bring them back to Brighton as part of Brighton Fringe and Brighton Festival. As the largest arts festival in England, and one of the largest fringe festivals in the world, it’s particularly gratifying to welcome them in the year when we have extended by a week to include the summer half-term.”

The Parlure Spiegeltent featured at the Brighton Fringe in 2008 and 2009, but pulled out of the event in 2010, citing financial problems.

However, the last time the Famous Spiegeltent – operated by Bates – appeared at the event was in 2006, having debuted as part of the main festival in 2004.

This year, the Famous Spiegeltent will also host a nightly Festivals Club event, where audiences can mix with performers while the venue features live DJs and cabaret acts.

Chief executive of Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival Andrew Comben said he was delighted to welcome back the “iconic venue” to Brighton.

Full details of the Brighton Fringe will be announced on February 26, while the festival’s programme will be revealed on February 27
