Shameless actor David Threlfall to play Tommy Cooper in ITV drama
ITV has commissioned a drama about Tommy Cooper, written by Men Behaving Badly creator Simon Nye and starring Shameless actor David Threlfall as the comedian.
The 120-minute drama, called Tommy, will be made by Left Bank Pictures, the production company behind shows such as Strike Back and DCI Banks.
It will focus on Cooper’s relationships with his assistant Mary Kay and his wife Gwen, who will be played by Amanda Redman.
The casting of the Mary has yet to be announced.
Filming will begin in London this June with magician John Fisher – who was Cooper’s friend - acting as a consultant on the drama.
Tommy will be executive produced by Left Bank Pictures chief executive Andy Harries and directed by Benjamin Caron.
ITV director of drama commissioning Steve November, who ordered the film, said: “Tommy Cooper was an ITV legend and so it feels very fitting to be telling his story on ITV. Left Bank have brought together wonderful talent in Simon Nye, David Threlfall and Amanda Redman to tell the story.”
