Shakespeare’s Globe and Sheffield Theatres have been named as London theatre of the year and regional theatre of the year in The Stage 100 Awards 2013.

Now in their third year, The Stage 100 Awards run alongside annual power list The Stage 100, with the awards recognising the outstanding organisations working in theatre today.

Four other categories were also announced. The Union Theatre in Southwark won fringe theatre of the year, Glasgow-based A Play, A Pie and a Pint won producer of the year and ALRA North won school of the year.

Meanwhile, the Unsung Hero award returned this year with two winners. Anne McNulty was recognised for her work as casting director of the Donmar Warehouse, while Chris Isherman was recognised for his work as theatre manager at the West End’s Duchess Theatre.

Winners will be presented with their awards at The Stage’s New Year Party at the New London Theatre on January 25.

Alistair Smith, deputy editor of The Stage and chair of The Stage 100 Awards judging panel, said: “It proved another incredibly difficult year for the panel with many worthy nominees in all our categories. But, we felt that our eventual winners were the best of the best and reflected the superb work that is going on in theatres and in the performing arts more broadly across the UK.”

Stage readers were able to nominate organisations and individuals in all six categories.  However, the final decision was taking by The Stage’s judging panel. The judging panel for the awards comprised Stage editor Brian Attwood, deputy editor Alistair Smith, reporter Nicola Merrifield, critics Mark Shenton and Aleks Sierz, Stage education/training editor Susan Elkin and former Theatrical Management Association president and Stage backstage editor AK Bennett-Hunter.

Previous winners of The Stage 100 Awards have included the National Theatre, Chichester Festival Theatre and English Touring Theatre.
