Ruth Mackenzie has been appointed to lead the development of the next phase of The Space, an online digital arts platform run by Arts Council England and the BBC.

The Space is due to relaunch in spring 2014, having previously run in 2012. It allows users to access arts content online, for free.

Mackenzie, who was director of the Cultural Olympiad and is a former artistic director of Chichester Festival Theatre, will be responsible for overseeing commissions for the project’s opening programme and for recruiting its launch team.

ACE chief executive Alan Davey said: “We are delighted that Ruth will be joining The Space to oversea the development of this exciting next phase.”

Mackenzie’s position is temporary, and the position of a permanent chief executive officer will be advertised next year.
