Nigel Planer joins the cast of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Nigel Planer has been cast as Grandpa Jo in the new musical version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Planer, best known for playing Neil in The Young Ones, has previously appeared in West End shows including Wicked and We Will Rock You.
He joins the already announced Douglas Hodge, who will play Willy Wonka in the show, which has music by March Shaiman. Shaiman has also penned the lyrics alongside Scott Wittman.
Other casting announced today includes Clive Carter, who will play Mr Salt, and Jasna Ivir, who takes on the role of Mrs Gloop. Paul J Medford will appear as Mr Beauregarde, while Iris Roberts will play Mrs Teavee and Myra Sands will star as Grandma Georgina.
The cast also includes Joe Allen, David Birch, Michelle Bishop, Mireia Mambo Bokele, Matthew Clark, Alex Clatworthy, Jennifer Davison, Luke Fetherston and Jack Shalloo.
Further casting has yet to be announced.
The musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s story is being directed by Sam Mendes.and is produced by Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures, Neal Street Productions and Kevin McCormick.
It will open at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on June 25.
