Leicester Square Theatre launches new musical theatre writing prize
The Leicester Square Theatre in London has launched an initiative to discover new musical theatre writers, with the winning work receiving a fully-staged production at the venue.
Called the New Musical Project, the competition invites composers to submit a new, unpublished or never previously performed one-act musical.
Out of the submissions, six shortlisted finalists will have their work performed at a rehearsed reading, with one being selected to have their production fully staged in the venue’s Lounge space in May next year.
At each rehearsed reading, 30 minutes of the piece will be performed and an industry panel will provide feedback. The venue will provide a cast, director and musical director for the readings.
The theatre said: “The New Musical Project is a unique opportunity for writers to develop their work alongside a professional theatre with the support of an experienced creative team.”
Composers have until December 1 to submit their entries, which should include a short treatment about the production and recordings of three contrasting songs from the show.
