Brighton Festival reveals Hofesh Shechter as guest director 2014
Choreographer Hofesh Shechter is to guest direct Brighton Festival 2014, an annual mixed arts event that takes place across the city.
Shechter, who is also a composer and musician, will open the festival with his contemporary dance company’s new production in May.
The show, Sun, has been co-commissioned by Brighton Festival and runs from May 3 at the festival. This marks the end of the production’s world tour.
The piece features 14 dancers and a soundtrack composed by Shechter. It has lighting design by Lee Curran.
Hofesh Shechter Company was named the first resident company of Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival in 2008.
Since then the organisation has been commissioned by Brighton Festival to create works including The Art of Not Looking Back and Political Mother.
Brighton Festival 2014 runs from May 3 to 25, 2014. Full programme details will be announced on February 25.
Shechter said: “Brighton has a magic to it that no one can explain. Finding a place where one can develop and grow artistically is a delicate thing, an important thing. Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival have been an inspiring, energising and encouraging place for my company and me in the last five years.”
Andrew Comben, chief executive of Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival, added: “Hofesh's instinctive understanding of Brighton and our festival has been a great starting point for our planning, and I feel it's particularly pertinent that he steps into the role in 2014 following a highly successful five years of working together.”
