Bertie Carvel among new faces elected to Equity committees

Bertie Carvel, Tony Gardner and Marilyn Cutts are among more than 40 union members elected to stand on Equity committees for the first time.

Results of the election were published this week, following a ballot that received an 8% turn-out of from the union membership. Of the 138 members who were elected, more than 40 are thought to have never sat on an Equity committee before.

Martin Brown, Equity assistant general secretary for communications and membership support, said it was “almost certainly the biggest number of first-time electees we have ever had”. He added: “This injection of so many new members is a very positive step forward for Equity’s democracy”.

Olivier Award winner [1] Carvel, who was involved in a disagreement with the union earlier this year over plans to introduce two shows on a Sunday in the West End [2], was among the new figures elected to the stage actors committee, alongside Cutts, Jackie Clune, Peter Forbes, David Horovitch and Hywel Morgan. Meanwhile, Gardner was elected to the screen actors committee, alongside fellow new faces Stephen Hogan and Jay Taylor.
