London’s Southwark Playhouse has confirmed that it will move to a  nearby converted office and warehouse space at Elephant and Castle next year while its current venue undergoes redevelopment.

The theatre will transfer to Newington Causeway at the beginning of next year and hopes to open the premises in April 2013.

The new site’s 240-seat main house and 120-seat studio means it will provide larger performance spaces than the theatre’s current home.

There will also be room for its own cafe, rehearsal rooms and a dedicated space for education work, which are not possible at the London Bridge theatre.

Southwark Playhouse has been provided with space in the London Bridge station redevelopment, but will not be able to return until the project is completed in 2018.
