Scottish Dance Theatre is to tour to four Indian cities this autumn, including a performance at the Delhi International Arts Festival.

The tour, which is supported by Creative Scotland and the British Council Scotland, has been two years in the planning for Scotland’s national contemporary dance company.

Speaking of the benefits to the Dundee-based company, SDT's acting artistic director, James MacGillivray, said: "We look forward to cultivating fruitful relationships with the artists we will work with in India, to sharing a cultural exploration of dance through both our performances and our extensive outreach programme.

"This experience will enrich the creative development of the artists within SDT, and provide a more vibrant palette for the creation of art here in Scotland."

Running from October 18 to November 4, the tour will take in the cities of Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Bangalore. During the tour, the ten-strong company will will be responsible for delivering an extensive outreach programme to school children, teachers, charities, and professional dancers.

Announcing the tour, Scottish cultural secretary Fiona Hyslop said that she would be seeing one of the performances as part of her own week-long diplomatic visit to India this month.

She said: "There can be no doubt that cultural collaborations such as this can help to forge new alliances between Scotland and India. I am sure these dancers will be fantastic ambassadors for Scotland on their forthcoming tour."
