Mark Benton to star in UK tour of Hairspray
Mark Benton is to play Edna Turnblad in a touring production of the musical Hairspray, which will open at the Lowry in Salford next year.
Thr production will tour from February 13, 2013 and is being produced by Stage Entertainment.
Benton, who is best known for his television work on shows such as Early Doors and Waterloo Road, said: “I can’t wait to start Hairspray, it’s going to be amazing fun and an interesting challenge for me as it’s my first foray into the world of musicals. As a musical I think it has eveything, great songs, great script, really interesting story and lots and lots of laughs.”
Hairspray opened in London at the Shaftesbury Theatre in 2007 and won the best musical prize at the 2008 Olivier Awards. Its first UK tour was in 2010.
After appearing at the Lowry, it will continue to tour until September next year, when it plays the Norwich Theatre Royal.
Hairspray has a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, and music by Marc Shaiman, who wrote the show’s lyrics with Scott Wittman.
