The Lyric Hammersmith theatre in London has been recognised for its efforts to operate as an environmentally sustainable venue.

It has been given a three star Industry Green status – the highest level offered by that certification scheme - which no other cultural organisation holds.

Presented by environmental charity Julie’s Bicycle, the Industry Green certification recognises organisations that are committed to environmental sustainability, communicate their initiatives effectively, reduce their emissions and energy consumption levels and monitor the impact.

Since being awarded a one star rating last year, the Lyric Hammersmith has decreased its overall energy use by 6%.

Last week the venue was also named the winner of the Greenest Venue Award at the London Theatre Consortium Green Awards for the second consecutive year.

Jessica Hepburn, executive director of the Lyric Hammersmith, said: ‘We are so delighted and proud to be the first cultural venue to achieve three star Industry Green status. Two years ago we set out to become a model of practice of sustainability within the industry and this rating is testament to how hard the team at the Lyric have worked to achieve this.’
