Lionel Bart musical Quasimodo to receive world premiere at the King’s Head

Quasimodo, a musical by Lionel Bart, will receive its world premiere at the King’s Head Theatre in London next year.

The musical will feature a cast of eight, yet to be announced.

Bart wrote the words and music for Quasimodo, based on the book Notre Dame de Paris by Victor Hugo, in 1963.

He had hoped the show would make it to the West End, and in 1995 a semi-staged workshop was held for investors and producers, which featured Frances Rufelle as Esmerelda.

However, the musical was not produced in Bart's lifetime. He died in 1999.

Adam Spreadbury-Maher, artistic director at the King’s Head, said: “Choosing our first musical at the King’s Head was a simple one for me. It had to be new and it had to be British.”

He added he was “incredibly honoured” to be producing the world premiere of the show, and described Bart as the “father of the modern British musical”.

The production will run from March 20 until April 13, 2013. It will be directed by Robert Chevara, associate director at the King’s Head.
