E-card campaign teaches politicians value of dance
Advocacy body Dance UK has launched a campaign to persuade politicians of the value of dance in the run-up to the general election.
For the DanceVote 2010 campaign, people across the country are being asked to send e-cards to their local parliamentary candidates. The cards state that the sender is a local voter who is interested in dance and asks each candidate how they would support dance in their area if elected. The messages can be customised by senders to reflect their personal interests in dance.
Since the campaign launched, more than 450 people have sent emails and more than 40 candidates have pledged support for DanceVote 2010.
Dance UK director Caroline Miller explained: “It’s really about identifying new champions in the next election and about raising awareness… because that has been the biggest problem for the last four years.
“When Dance UK has been focusing on talking to politicians, most of them just don’t know what is happening in terms of dance in their local area and if we can tackle that, it would be a big step forward. If difficult funding decisions have to be made, at least they’ll make those decisions from a position of knowledge.”
High-profile organisations sitting on the campaign’s steering committee include the Royal Ballet, the Council for Dance Education and Training and Youth Dance England. Many member organisations have contributed funds to the campaign and are promoting it.
After the election, the DanceVote 2010 website will remain as a tool for people to contact their MPs regarding dance.
