Radio 2 marks 50 years of West Side Story
West Side Story’s 50th anniversary will be marked by BBC Radio 2 with an evening of programmes featuring performers from the film and stage versions of the show.
Among those lined up to take part in the celebrations on Friday, September 21 is Chita Rivera, who played the role of Anita in the original Broadway production.
The first programme features new interviews with composer Leonard Bernstein’s daughters. This will be followed by a special Friday Night is Music Night celebrating Bernstein’s work, starring Hayley Westenra and Michael Xavier. The final programme in the line-up is From West Side to Worldwide, hosted by John Barrowman.
BBC Radio 2 head of live music, events and talent Lewis Carnie said: “This really is a superb tribute and one we are especially pleased to bring to the air. It re-emphasises BBC Radio 2’s commitment to musical theatre and its enduring influence in entertainment.”
In last week’s edition we reported that BBC Radio 2 would be hosting a Jerry Herman gala concert in London on September 27. The correct date is Sunday, September 23.
