Farr appointed artistic director at Lyric Hammersmith

David Farr has been appointed the new artistic director at the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith and will take up the position in June next year.

Farr, currently joint artistic director and co-chief executive at the Bristol Old Vic, succeeds Neil Bartlett who steps down after a ten year reign at the theatre at the end of this month.

He has been acclaimed for productions such as Paradise Lost, Comedy of Errors and A Midsummer Night’s Dream – for which he won a TMA Award for Best Director.

Farr said: “The Lyric Hammersmith has long been one of my favourite theatres, a stage on which I have seen work as wide-ranging and ground-breaking as anywhere in the country. I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to take the Lyric on the next leg of its theatrical adventure.”

Prior to his arrival in Bristol, he was artistic director of London’s Gate Theatre and had also directed for the Young Vic, Almeida Opera and the National Theatre.

Sandy Orr, chairman of the Lyric, said: “We are delighted that we have secured David as our new artistic director. He is widely recognised as one of the country’s most talented young stage directors and writers and someone who has built a formidable reputation for his imaginative work in Bristol and elsewhere. We see this as a particularly strong appointment.”
