Pegasus Opera presents the UK premiere of two one-act operas by Philip Hagemann
Ruth and the Dark Lady of the Sonnets
Pegasus Opera continues its journey of presenting excellent opera with diverse casts. We are proud to present the UK premiere of two one-act operas by the renowned New York composer Philip Hagemann. Hagemann’s composition style was described by The New York Times as “essentially tonal and lushly chromatic. Whole-tone melodic patterns recall Ravel. He also writes effectively for the voice.”
Hagemann and Pegasus Opera have created two operas that tell stories of strong women. Ruth is based on the biblical book of Ruth, one of only two books in the Bible named after a woman. Ruth illustrates an epic tale of loyalty, sacrifice and kindness. It is a story of acceptance as Ruth, a Moabite, marries the Israeli Boaz.
The Dark Lady of the Sonnets is based on a one-act play by Bernard Shaw and continues the theme of strong women. The ‘Dark Lady’ is a Bernard Shaw fantasy which sees a lady of the royal court have a secret relationship with William Shakespeare. The production also features the formidable Queen Elizabeth herself!
A combustible mixture of outstanding opera and biblical tales.
