Obituary: Stephanie Arditti – ‘tireless and meticulous costume supervisor’

In the largely unsung role of costume supervisor, Stephanie Arditti – who described her job as “getting the designs off the paper, from two-dimensional images to three-dimensional images” – was a force to be reckoned with.

Tireless and meticulous in her attention to detail, she worked extensively with the National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company and in the West End. She also formed significant partnerships with designers Christopher Oram and Bunny Christie and director-producer Michael Grandage.

Born in Streatham, south London, after graduating from the Wimbledon School of Art she found work with the Royal Opera Company and Sadler’s Wells Opera before supervising shows at the Redgrave, Farnham and Yvonne Arnaud, Guildford.

Notable credits at the National Theatre included Peter Hall’s 1987 revival of Antony and Cleopatra with Anthony Hopkins and Judi Dench, Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park With George (1990), Tom Stoppard’s nine-hour The Coast of Utopia (2002), Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (2012) and David Hare’s The Red Barn (2016).

With the RSC, she contributed to Gregory Doran’s 2004 revival of All’s Well That Ends Well and the adaptations of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies (2014).

Recent West End credits included the Donmar Warehouse’s Madame de Sade with Dench (Wyndham’s Theatre, 2009) and Rupert Goold’s staging of Made in Dagenham (Adelphi Theatre, 2014).

Stephanie Arditti was born on February 28, 1956 and died on February 21, aged 61.
