Peter Diamond

Highly respected British stunt co-ordinator Peter Diamond masterminded the action on several TV shows, including Dr Who and Heartbeat, and blockbuster films such as Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Star Wars trilogy.

Born in 1929, he originally intended an acting career and trained at RADA in the late forties but branched into fight arranging shortly after graduating in 1951. For the next two years he honed his stage fighting skills in repertory theatres around the country. In 1953 film industry veterans were surprised to see him appointed as fight director for MGM’s premier cinemascope epic, Knights of the Round Table.

With the advent of full-time television programming in the mid-fifties, Peter became one of the first stuntmen to be employed by both the BBC and ITV channels. For the remainder that era and throughout the sixties he was in constant demand as a Master of Sword and action arranger for every film and TV company in the British Isles. His credits included The Buccaneers, Sir Francis Drake, Z Cars, Dr Who and Virgin of the Secret Service for TV and such films as Storm Over the Nile, The Moonraker, Siege of the Saxons, The Scarlet Blade, The Brigand of Kandahar, A Challenge for Robin Hood, The Devil Ship Pirates and many Hammer ‘horror’ classics.

Over the next two decades he gained a reputation as a world-class stunt co-ordinator and 2nd Unit director with credits on such prestigious productions as Highlander (1986), The Princess Bride (1987), Treasure Island (1990), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and the entire Star Wars trilogy (1977-1983).

A devoted husband and father, Peter often refused offers of international employment in order to remain in the UK within easy reach of his family. At the time of his demise he was returning from an episode of Heartbeat, a series he had been associated with since 1994.

He died on March 27 and leaves Olga, his wife of 50 years, six sons and ten grandchildren.
