Australian soprano and violinist Peggy Mortimer, best known for her musical act with her husband Enzo Toppano, has died, aged 74.
The Toppanos were one of Australia's most famous light entertainment acts, performing for nearly five decades. Born Margaret Joan Mortimer in Sydney on September 22, 1929, she met and married Toppano while appearing in British variety theatres in the early thirties. The couple returned to Australia in 1949. They had three children - Lorenzo, a trumpeter and composer, Peta, an actress, and Dean, a guitarist and drummer - and the family toured the world and recorded as The Travelling Toppanos.
Mortimer died on November 23 and is survived by her husband and children.
