Last year’s conference included a Keynote from Arts Council England’s chief executive, Darren Henley followed by panel discussions such as Who speaks up for theatre?, Building a better financial model for theatre, How do we ensure a future for new writing?, Making flexible working work and What is theatre’s future in the metaverse?

 

Bringing theatre professionals from across the world together, Future of Theatre provides the space to have vital conversations, reflect, challenge and share ideas for a stronger theatre sector.

 

Note the conference will be BSL interpreted for both in-person and online delegates with the feature being available for the on demand access post event.

What is Future of Theatre?

 

Future of Theatre is an award-winning conference for the entire theatre sector. 

 

The conference brings theatre professionals from across the world together and provides a platform to have vital conversations, reflect, share ideas and challenge the way things have previously been done in order to build a stronger theatre sector.

 

Future of Theatre 2021 was the first of its kind to bring the entire theatre sector together since the start of the pandemic. Over the last three years, the digital event offered an extravaganza of keynotes, interviews, presentations and panel discussion featuring the industry’s most influential voices. Speakers included Andrew Lloyd Webber, Nica Burns, Matthew Xia, Amanda Parker, Paule Constable and Athena Stevens.  

 

The conference brought together over 700 attendees online from over 21 countries.

 

In 2023, for the first time ever, Future of Theatre was delivered in person at the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama. Over 200 theatremakers gathered in person at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama with hundreds of delegates also having online access.

The Big Idea

The Big Idea

 

Do you have an idea that could shape the future of theatre for the better?

 

We would love to invite you to participate in The Big Idea that will be showcased at the event.
 
This feature is an opportunity for theatremakers and industry professionals to pitch their big idea which would change theatre for the better. 

 

You can be as creative or ambitious as you like. You can share a new idea or something you are already doing that you think could be shared more widely. Remember, ideas are meant to be shared!

 

Your pitch could involve an idea that is very practical and specific eg. all tickets should be printed on recycled paper. Rehearsals should be held between certain hours. 

 

Alternatively, they can be technological such as a new product; or they can be systemic and all-encompassing i.e. all tickets should be free. All performances should be streamed online.

 

Your idea could be about sustainability or accessibility in the industry.

 

We encourage you to introduce your big idea clearly at the start of your 500 words, bring solutions and even comment on how you would develop your idea should you be able get support or funding for it.

How do I submit?

 

If you would like to take part, please send a short (max 500 words) email with your idea to events@thestage.co.uk  with the subject line ’The Big Idea’. 

 

Our event programmers will invite a selection of the best ideas to present a short (2-3 minute) presentation at the event or - if you are unable to attend - submit a video presentation.
 
If you are selected to present your Big Idea at the conference you will receive a FREE ticket to attend the event.
