Partnering with The Stage, the company is offering two half-scholarships worth a total of £21,500. Paul Vale finds out what’s in store for the lucky winners this year
Fourth Monkey Actor Training Company provides one of the most hands-on and innovative training programmes in the UK, offering valuable performance opportunities to all its graduates. Once again, the London-based company is partnering with The Stage to offer two coveted half-scholarships for the Two Year Rep Accelerated Actor Training Programme, worth a total of £21,500.
Fourth Monkey founder and artistic director Steven Green sheds some light on to what lucky scholarship winners can expect.
“Fourth Monkey started life as an act of rebellion,” he says. “I wanted to create a school that was inclusive and supported artists to become proactive theatremakers who generate work that harnesses the power of their own individuality. We place an incredible focus on ensemble, as the UK’s only repertory theatre school. Students support one another and work as a team – there are no stars here – therefore the whole performance benefits from the group’s united dedication to the work.”
The winners of the scholarships will be enrolled on to the Two Year Rep Accelerated Actor Training Programme, which has been restructured for 2019. Students will receive a greater amount of contact time and enjoy tuition from a wider selection of working practitioners. Each day, they will take part in voice, movement and acting classes, training as an ensemble – and, over the course of two years, they will take part in six performance seasons, culminating in a run at the prestigious Camden Fringe. Each year, the graduate performance is created in partnership with a professional theatre company, and at the end of the course, students produce both a showreel and a voice reel.
So what can potential students expect on the day of auditions? Explaining Fourth Monkey’s alternative approach to auditions and what the auditioning panel is looking for, Green says: “We like to spend the whole day getting to know you, and importantly, for you to get to know us and to start to get a feel for whether you might like to train at Fourth Monkey. Every person who applies will receive an audition on a single day, for your convenience, and you will receive the outcome within a week.”
The audition day begins with a full company warm-up, after which, the audition panel will hear your two prepared speeches. These will then be reworked with you, to see how you take notes from a director. Then there is an informal interview with the artistic team, before a tour of the building with one of the Fourth Monkey alumni. In the afternoon, you will take part in five workshops including voice and text, physical theatre, devising, theatre clown and ensemble.
“We’re looking for a candidate to excel in at least three areas, which is why the day is so varied,” explains Green. “For those areas you may not be as confident in, we are looking for an openness to learning and a willingness to develop those weaker elements. Ultimately, we want to find those students who show enthusiasm for working in a collaborative and creative environment.”
