This year for the first time, Arts Ed joined forces with The Stage Scholarships to offer a selection of awards including places at the Arts Ed Extra skills academy, Arts Ed summer course 2018 and the Excelerate acting course.

The total value of the awards offered to more than 30 applicants comes to £13,209. The auditions have been outstanding and director of Arts Ed Extra Jonathan Goodwin is extremely pleased with the results.

“What has been amazing is to see how much young talent there in this country. Their passion and dedication is extraordinary. So many of them give so much time outside of their academic studies to pursue their passion. It has been a privilege to be able to offer these opportunities to these inspiring young people,” he said.

Zain Siddique, aged 26 from Gloucester, has won a place on the Exelerate acting course and will now relocate to London to pursue a career in acting.

“The scholarship from Arts Ed was so surprising, I am still in shock,” she said. “Coming from a working-class background meant that I was unable to pursue acting as a BA course, so this evening course provides me with financial stability and allows me to work at the same time. I feel incredibly lucky and plan on using this course to expand my acting skills.”

There have been six part-scholarships awarded to students including Ellie Grant, aged 17 from London, who has a won a place on the Arts Ed West End week.

“This is an amazing opportunity. I am so grateful to be considered and so happy to receive this,” she said. “Giving up all my spare time for the past six years to work hard in dance, singing and improvisation has meant being offered fantastic opportunities like this. Next year I go into my upper sixth year at the Brit School so I am excited to learn new skills and develop existing ones and make new friends at the same time. Arts Ed is a college I aspire to and it will be fantastic to get a real feel of what life is like there.”

Four Arts Ed Extra skills academy scholarships have been awarded, including one as a musical theatre trainee to nine-year-old Lillie King, who has been travelling from her home in Bedford every week for the Saturday Arts Ed course.

“When I was told that I had been awarded the scholarship it was like a dream had come true. I floated on air all the way home, that Saturday afternoon. I would like to thank everyone at Arts Ed for their encouragement.”

On top of these fantastic opportunities there have been 20 places offered for the summer school. Winners include Madison Rhodes, nine,  from Lytham St Annes. Madison, who won a place at the Putting on a Musical summer school for ages seven to 12 years, burst into tears when she heard news of her place.

“I would like to train in musical theatre full-time and I hope that the summer school will really give me an insight into the training and discipline that goes with it.”

Athina Bezzato, aged 10 from Chiswick, has been dancing for years already. She has won numerous awards with Spirit Dance company and has also won a place on the Putting on a Musical summer school.

“I am so excited to be able to take part in this musical theatre summer course,” she said. “We will be working on the Wizard of Oz, one of my favourite stories. For me, this is another big step towards becoming a performer in the arts.”

Keelan Freeman, 17,  from Exeter has won a place on the musical theatre summer school.

“The fact that my passion for performing was recognised is a fantastic feeling and I’m so excited to expand my skills. This opportunity is  important for me as it has boosted my confidence in auditioning for the BA (hons) musical theatre course at Arts Ed in the next academic year and I’m grateful for the school’s support.”
