Be among the 90% of Liverpool Theatre School students who go straight into a performing career, with small class sizes and a family atmosphere. Paul Vale finds out more
The Stage Scholarships is proud to work in collaboration with schools all over the UK. Once again, the Liverpool Theatre School is offering a place on its Diploma in Professional Acting course. The school has been operating since 1939, guiding its talented students towards careers in performing arts. In 2017, 90% of LTS graduates moved straight into professional performing careers. To the lucky scholarship winner, the three-year course providing intensive training in acting for TV, film and theatre, is worth £31,500.
Liverpool has a rich and varied cultural heritage with the Everyman and Playhouse, Royal Court and Empire theatres all within easy reach of the school. The facility boasts five bright, modern dance studios plus rehearsal spaces, an acting studio and stage. There are also three dedicated singing studios, as well as a well-appointed library. School principal Maxine Ellis is keen to highlight the intimacy of the school, which encourages a family atmosphere and focuses on the individual’s needs.
“We are a small school of about 55 students studying dance, musical theatre and acting. Class sizes are no more than about 16, so we get to know everybody on a one-to-one basis,” Ellis explains. “Smaller classes allow for more focused teaching and everybody is known as an individual. It’s much cheaper to live and train in Liverpool than London and the area is a vibrant student location with plenty going on. Most of the students live in lodgings in walking distance and our students perform at the Unity Theatre, which is very close to the school.”
Last year, 19-year-old Samuel Craig from Manchester won a place on the course and is currently enjoying his second term of training. Head of acting Alan Pattison, who created this course for LTS, offers an insight into what they look for in the successful applicant.
“When we hold auditions, we are looking for somebody with a real curiosity for the arts and for the world. We want people to look beyond simply being in a play and to bring something else to the table. Apart from the skill set they bring to the audition on the day, I am looking for a conversation about what they can offer and what insight they can give.”
The scholarship on offer at LTS is for the Diploma in Professional Acting, a full-time course over three years, validated by Trinity College London. Open to students aged 19 and over, the course delivers training to equip students with a robust and flexible system with which to work, and to develop their skills and approach to acting practically and philosophically. Aside from acting classes, students will have classes in singing, dancing and stage combat, while there are plenty of chances to perform. As students approach graduation, there are showcases in Liverpool and London.
