Jack and the Beanstalk
Acknowledging our great Olympic year with numerous thoughtful references, the Mercury’s zombie-fied giant, handled masterfully by Lyndi Smith, would certainly gain the Danny Boyle thumbs-up.
Chillingly, the giant’s spell-binding demands whet the appetite for a memorable Act II emergence and in designer Richard Foxton’s imposing set, you have a lair worthy of any colossus fairy-tale freak.
If the dynamic company rendition of Mr Blue Sky is anything to go by, choreographer Charlie Morgan has clearly rigorously honed the well-drilled cast. A frenetic bombardment of bounce continues throughout, with enough flicks during Gold to warrant even a 10 from Craig.
As she did in her stint last year as Belle in Beauty and the Beast, Emily Bull (Mia) nails her harmonies terrifically during I’m Yours alongside Jai Vethamony’s Jack. It’s a pity that another focal point last year, Clare Humphrey, features only sporadically this time around. Her fleeting appearances, as Na’vi-like storyteller Xena, are a clear demonstration of what could have been.
While dastardly duo Fleshcreep (David Tarkenter) and Goosebump (Tim Freeman) are a tad tamer than their villainous names suggest, outrageous Ignatius Anthony was always going to retain his/her crown in the popularity stakes, with a far from understated display as Dame Shakira Trott.
