Although Craig Glover’s dame provides admirable support, Snow White is undeniably Liam Dolan’s show. Now in his eighth year at Kilmarnock’s Palace Theatre, Dolan co-wrote the script, directs and stars as Jimmy the Jester. His combination of cheeky wit, complex wordplay and direct connection with the audience defines the pantomime. Plenty of west coast humour pervades the banter and the addition of an English Queen Evilyn only emphasises how this pantomime is designed for the local crowd.

With a well-drilled ensemble of local youngsters, and Liam Webster’s Prince Michael limited to a few songs and a final battle, the plot and structure exploit Dolan’s energetic talents. The familiar scenes - sing-along, food fight, audience participation - are led by Dolan and it is to Glover’s credit that he can match Dolan’s pace.

The script is broad enough to keep children enthusiastic and the traditional asides for adults are worked heavily. But it’s the knowledge of Kilmarnock that makes this pantomime swing - the humour is regional and precise, including references to audience members’ workplaces. The slickness of the musical numbers and the grandeur of the set may have the high production values of a national company, but Snow White has the intimacy of a community-focused performance.
