To accompany the launch of his debut album, Songs From the American Motel, singer Ezra Axelrod has checked into the Leicester Square Basement to showcase his talent and introduce himself to a broader audience.
Axlerod hails originally from Oregon and though currently based in London, Songs From the American Motel examines his years of wanderlust and an innate inability to conform under any circumstances.
Axelrod wears his heart on his sleeve and, while the anecdotes can be amusing, he is somewhat prone to occasional lapses of taste and a desire to share just a little bit too much information with his audience. That said, Axelrod’s musical talent and that of his supporting band is self-evident. Catchy lyrics go hand in hand with hummable tunes from the buoyant Prayer From a Dressing Room to launch the show, complete with the lead vocalist dancing around in skimpy underwear to the tongue in cheek Pornstars and Broken Hearts. In a more introspective moment we are given the ballad Father, which goes some way to demonstrating the emotional range of this versatile performer.
Songs From the American Motel might not feature the narrative audiences expect from the publicity, but ultimately it is a lively and novel way to launch an album in the West End.
Production information can change over the run of the show.
