After last year’s box office record-breaking first effort the panto partnership between Imagine Theatre and the Victoria is rooted firmly with this Sleeping Beauty.
Two Halifax lads have key roles - Neil Hurst as the jester and Thomas Milner as Prince Valiant. Hurst impressed last year and he does so again with his ability to energise the show and involve the audience. Brisker jokes are needed on his first entrance but that is a minor quibble. Hurst could be a feature of Christmas in Halifax for many years to come.
Milner is well known to younger audiences from playing a prominent character in TV’s Waterloo Road and he has quite a following. Princes are usually there to satisfy the girls but in Sleeping Beauty Milner is that rare thing - a prince that boys will root for and imagine themselves being. He has presence, he gives the story integrity and he can sing.
Emily Trebicki’s Carabosse is a welcome contribution. Feisty, frequently petulant and very funny.
Technically this pantomime is one of the best seen at the Victoria. The lighting gives a richnesss and vitality to the sets and the key scenes look exciting.
